What's the difference between a float and a trowel?

A float is a small board with a curved handle made of plastic, rubber, wood, or metal. When the freshly applied plaster has firmed up, it is 'floated' or glided over the surface to smooth out any irregularities. A float can be used inside a building on plastered walls and ceilings, as well as on outside walls
